Battle Log #10.1 – The Company Compass

A company without a defined direction isn’t lost.

Or maybe it is, if direction actually matters. Many companies are moving at full throttle, but zigzagging all over the place.

Most companies can explain what they do. Some can explain how they do it. But surprisingly few can still explain why they do it — and in marketing, that matters more than you might think.

When the why–how–what hasn’t been defined, you won’t notice it immediately. In marketing, it slowly starts leaking through every hatch:
→ The message changes from one channel to another, and customers no longer recognize the same company.
→ The team stays busy and the budget gets burned, but hits are few and far between. Every campaign becomes another guess.

A clear why–how–what, vision, and mission aren’t pointless statements to frame and hang on the wall. If they just end up as a PDF in management’s folder after a nice little brand workshop, was that really money well spent?

Take out the compass and set the direction first. Speed will follow.

Happy Monday. Here we go again.
